Frequently Asked Questions About Your Appointment & Treatments at Stephen James Trichology
Your Consultation
Who will carry out my consultation?
«Your consultation will be with one of our Consultant Trichologists, Stephen James or Christopher Benedict, both of whom are experienced specialists in hair and scalp conditions.
How long does a hair loss consultation take?
«Initial consultations typically last 45 minutes to 1 hour, allowing time for a thorough assessment, discussion, and explanation of findings.
What happens during the consultation?
«We will review your medical history, lifestyle and hair care routine, perform a basic health check, examine your hair and scalp with specialist tools, explain our findings, and create a personalised management plan.
What is included in the basic health check?
«The health check includes a snapshot of your vital signs, such as pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation and blood glucose, to help identify any immediate or relevant health concerns.
Will I receive a hair loss diagnosis?
«Our aim is to provide a likely diagnosis based on your assessment. In some cases, further tests such as blood work or scalp analysis may be recommended to confirm underlying causes.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
«If possible, please bring photos showing the progression of your hair loss, recent blood test results, and a list of current medications, supplements, and hair products you use.
Will I feel pressured to start treatment?
«No. After your consultation, you will receive a detailed report so you can review everything in your own time, with no obligation or pressure to proceed.
Do you offer follow-up appointments?
«Yes. We offer follow-up consultations, progress reviews, and ongoing support to help manage your condition and support long-term hair and scalp health.
Genetic Testing
What is genetic testing for hair loss?
«Genetic testing for hair loss is a scientific analysis that examines specific genes associated with hair growth, hormonal balance and scalp health. It helps identify how your body responds to certain treatments and what factors may be contributing to hair thinning or shedding.
How does genetic testing help treat hair loss?
«By understanding your genetic profile, trichologists can determine which therapies, medications or topical treatments are most likely to be effective for you. This approach eliminates guesswork and ensures your treatment plan is tailored to your unique biological needs.
What does the test involve?
«The process is simple and non-invasive. A small saliva sample is collected and sent to a laboratory where your DNA is analysed using advanced testing techniques. Results are typically available within a few weeks and reviewed by your Consultant Trichologist.
What can the genetic test reveal?
«The test identifies genetic variations that influence how your body processes hormones such as DHT, metabolises key nutrients and responds to inflammation. It provides insight into factors that may be impacting your hair growth or scalp condition.
Who should consider having the test?
«Anyone experiencing hair thinning, pattern baldness or scalp problems that have not improved with standard treatments may benefit. It is also ideal for individuals who want a personalised, evidence-based understanding of their hair loss before beginning treatment.
Is genetic testing suitable for men and women?
«Yes, genetic testing is designed for both men and women experiencing hair loss or thinning. It provides valuable information that supports targeted treatment options regardless of gender.
How accurate is genetic testing for hair loss?
«When performed by an accredited laboratory, such as through the Fagron TrichoTest™, genetic testing provides highly accurate results based on scientifically researched genetic markers. These findings guide treatment decisions to improve long-term outcomes.
What happens after I receive my results?
«Your Consultant Trichologist will review your genetic report with you in detail, explaining what the findings mean and recommending suitable treatments. You will receive a personalised plan designed to restore scalp balance, strengthen hair and promote optimal growth.
Blood Testing
Why do I need a blood test for hair loss?
«Blood tests help identify internal causes of hair loss that cannot be seen on the scalp, such as nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances.
Which blood tests are commonly recommended for hair loss?
«We typically recommend tests for:
- Ferritin and iron levels
- Vitamin D and B12
- Thyroid functions (TSH, T3, T4)
- Hormone levels
These help us understand your internal health and how this might be affecting your hair.
Can blood tests help with all types of hair loss?
«Blood tests help identify underlying causes such as nutritional deficiencies, thyroid imbalances, hormonal changes, or iron deficiency - all of which can contribute to hair thinning or shedding. At Stephen James Trichology we use blood tests to help us create a targeted and effective plan to help you with your bespoke needs.
Do I need to fast or prepare for my blood test?
«Most basic screenings do not require fasting, but your trichologist will advise if any preparation is necessary.
How do I go about getting a blood test?
«Yes. We recommend you book an appointment with your GP. First, please book a consultation with one of our Consultant Trichologists so we can confirm whether a blood test is needed.
How long will it take to get my blood test results?
«Most routine test results are available within 24–48 hours, while specialist tests may take a little longer. Your GP or phlebotomist will be able to give you an idea of when to expect your results.
Medical-Grade Treatments
What makes your hair loss treatments “medical-grade”?
«Our treatments are selected based on clinical evidence, professional assessment, and medical oversight, rather than cosmetic claims or one-size-fits-all solutions.
What’s the difference between pharmaceutical & cosmeceutical treatments?
«Pharmaceuticals are clinically approved medications that target biological causes of hair loss. Cosmeceuticals are advanced topical products containing active ingredients that support scalp health and follicle function. We often use both together for optimal results.
Is minoxidil effective for hair loss?
«Yes. Minoxidil is one of the most widely studied hair loss treatments and is effective for many people when used consistently under professional guidance. It can reduce shedding and support regrowth in responsive follicles.
Are anti-androgens suitable for everyone?
«Anti-androgens such as finasteride or dutasteride are suitable for specific hair loss patterns and individuals. They are only recommended following a full consultation and risk assessment.
Will cosmeceuticals help me regrow my hair?
«Cosmeceuticals can significantly improve scalp health and hair quality and may support density in mild cases. However, for genetic or hormonally driven hair loss, they are most effective when combined with pharmaceutical treatments.
Are cosmeceuticals and pharmaceuticals safe for long-term use?
«When prescribed, selected, and monitored correctly, both pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical treatments are generally safe for long-term use. We provide ongoing reviews to ensure continued suitability.
How long does it take to see results?
«Most treatments require 3–6 months before visible improvements occur, as hair growth follows a slow biological cycle. We monitor progress and adjust plans as needed.
How do I know which hair or scalp treatment is right for me?
«Your personalised plan is determined during a consultation at Stephen James Trichology, where we assess your scalp, hair history, and any underlying factors to guide you toward the most appropriate treatment pathway.
